Our Staff:

Our staff recognizes the authority of God, and realizes that we are shepherds who serve under the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ. We desire to devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word. Our passion and goal is to equip the believers for the work of the ministry until we all attain maturity in the fullness of Christ.

THE REV. KENDALL B. SUMMERS
Pastor

In 2017 we welcomed our new pastor, The Rev Kendall Summers, who comes to us from Annapolis, Maryland.   Rev. Summers prefers that we refer to her as Pastor Kendall.   Recommended to us by our Bishop and synod, Pastor Kendall has a wide range of gifts, including two ministry degrees and specialized training in law.  She lives in Annapolis Maryland, where she has a family law and conflict resolution practice, and enjoys boating and the water.

Pastor Kendall is a mother to two adult children, Melissa (26) and Heather (24).  Melissa is working on her master’s in architecture in Connecticut and Heather is finishing law school in New York City.  Heather will be spending her last semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina! and Pastor Kendall is looking forward to travelling with her there and their exploring Buenos Aires together.

While our two seminaries, Gettysburg and Philadelphia have now joined together to form Union Seminary, Pastor Kendall experienced both during her seminary education, starting at Gettysburg, and concluding at Philadelphia Seminary where she was awarded both a Master’s of Divinity and  Master’s of Sacred Theology in Reformation History.   After serving at Christ Lutheran Church in Millersville and Salem Lutheran Church in Catonsville in Maryland during seminary, Pastor Kendall was called to the Metropolitan DC Synod in 2004/5 to serve Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Temple Hills, where she served for nine years.  At Our Saviour’s Lutheran, Pastor Kendall worked with a congregation in largely African American context transform in mission into a merger with an African Lutheran Congregation, and the congregation continues in a multicultural context and continues to serve the community in Christ as an African Lutheran presence in Prince Georges County.  While serving in the synod, Pastor Kendall also served on the Metropolitan DC Synod Council.  For three years she also served as Director for the Maryland Interfaith Legislative Coalition in Annapolis.

Pastor Kendall grew up in Massachusetts, living in Marblehead Mass., where she learned to sail.  She graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration; followed by law school at the The American University, Washington College of Law.   Following law school, Pastor Kendall was married.  She and her husband lived right here in Bethesda on Exeter Road, in the Edgemore neighborhood behind the library.  Pastor Kendall and her spouse practiced law with large firms in D.C. at the time, before moving to Annapolis.  She practices collaborative family law and family dispute resolution in Annapolis.

Passionate about the church, our community and our ministry together, Pastor Kendall should be on campus at CELC at least one day during the week and also on Sundays.

She can be reached on her cell phone (410) 991–0293 and by emailing her at the link below:

Jeremy Grenhart
Missional Director of Music & Communications

Jeremy comes to Christ Lutheran of Bethesda after serving for 3 years at Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington, DC, and 14 years at Bridge of Peace in Camden, NJ. Inviting good music into worship space is important to Jeremy, and is a calling he takes seriously. He is well versed in Gospel, Soul, Afro-Cuban, and Classical schools of music; and he’s just as happy playing a Bach fugue as he is playing the African spirituals. To that effect, look for music at Christ Lutheran to be a reflection of diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds, and to expand the boundaries of meaningful and vibrant worship. When Jeremy is not playing or rehearsing with a band, choir or other ensemble, he enjoys cooking with his fiancé and reading.
